Macau is a former Portuguese colony situated 60 kilometres (37 mi) southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometres (90 mi) from Guangzhou.
Macau was both the oldest and the last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on December 20, 1999.
At 28.6 square km and with only 520,400 people, the place is tiny, and a must see if you are in the area.
